I voted for George Bush, but held my nose while doing so. The ONLY issue that George Bush had going for him in my opinion was Iraq. And he is certainly not popular on that score. I can barely stand to see the American losses in this war, I can only imagine what it must be like for the people of Iraq. If they end up some functioning form of self government, then I will be comforted at the terrible loss of life. But this is very much an open question. I am hopeful that the people of Iraq will seize the opportunity. But they have so much to overcome.
The Democrats on the other hand ARE the party of big government, but it is precisely because they have that unpopular reputation that they have great difficulty enacting any big government programs. The Republicans on the other hand have no problem proposing new big government programs because they do not yet have the reputation.. (though many of us know better)
Government has grown much faster under George Bush than it did under Bill Clinton. The Democratic constituencies are pro government, but I think their leadership know the truth about how ineffective big government is. If you look at New Zealand for example, you'll see that it was the head of the "big government" socialist party that finally tackled downsizing government.
It may happen that way here as well. The Democrats are out of power and they want it back. The Republicans have the power and didn't to a single conservative/libertarian thing to succeed. Are they likely to try downsizing now that they have control of the patronage? Don't hold your breath.
Democrats are already talking up their surplus and the Republican deficits. They may be forced to become the responsible party in order to regain power, they are certainly loathe to become the "moral majority" party towards that end. A left-libertarian approach may just be what they need.
But I am not feeling real confident that either party will act responsibly any time soon.

SimonJester,
I looked back at the article looking for the references of Bush with "pride." I didn't see any but in fact I do have pride in George W. Bush. I recognize that he is much more a classic Democrat than a Republican, but I believe that can start a process of "babysteps" back to the right. People will never embrace a more conservative government at once but little by little they might come to their senses.
Of course, Bush has not vetoed a damn thing, created an entirely new beurocracy, and passed a grossly expensive Medicare benefit. But he has done some things of which I am immensly proud. The Faith Based Initiative, tax cuts, the War on Terror, and others. I am also very much behind social security privatization, and education vouchers. I will be highly pissed if they don't get done in the next four years.
Like you (I assume), my perfect world includes little to no government intervention in any aspect of our lives. The constitution lays out the responsibility of government and it has long since been left in the dust. But the reality is that we may never see that again, and certainly not in our lifetime. I don't know if support for Republicans is a step in the right direction or simply the slower road to ruin.
What I do know is this. If the Democrats had their way, we would all be spending less time on responding to each others blogs, and more time learning the Koran. The balls to step up to the plate on Islamic Fundamentalism alone makes Bush a man of vision and courage. There is no greater concern in our time. I would like nothing better than to return to the day when we can start arguing the role of government and God willing that day will come in our lifetime. Until then, I will continue to support Republicans.

I find it almost comical that Republicans like yourself refer to George Bush with such pride. George Bush as a matter of policy supports every kind of big government the Democrats do, even the War in Iraq is based on a belief that government works, he thinks he can democratize Iraq by force. I hope he is correct, but his faith in government as an institution is unwavering. He believes the federal government can educate every child, he hasn't vetoed a THING, he increased funding for the NEA, he created a NEW federal program for Seniors. Has it occured to you yet that George Bush is a Democrat in Republican clothing? Except for his call for a Consitutional Amendment to ban Gay Marriage, (Which he knew full well would go nowhere) he is a conservative in name only. In fact he lacks only one thing to be an actual Democrat, the ability to lie without shame. Of course Democrats pretend to believe that Bush lied about Iraq from the beginning, but they know that he simplied relied on the same intelligence that Bill Clinton relied on when he claimed Iraq was a threat. To hear the Democrats talk you'd think Bush is either an Evil Genius or a blundering fool, usually both. The comical thing there is George Bush is much more of a Democrat than any Republican since his father.
